Planning your first ski or snowboard trip and wondering what to buy in Thailand, where to find it, and what you can rent once you reach a resort in Japan? You do not need to buy a complete setup before you go. This SnowCrew guide helps you find local gear, prepare the things worth bringing from Thailand, and decide what to rent while you are still figuring out what you like.
If you are still shaping the trip itself, start with our first-time Japan ski trip guide.
First, decide what kind of gear you need
A snowboard shop, a technical ski-clothing store, a general winter-wear shop, and a clothing rental service solve different problems. If you need skis, ski boots, or a specific size, ask the store directly before making the trip. A shop that sells snow jackets or snowboards may not carry alpine skis.
| Store | Best for | Location or ordering |
|---|---|---|
| SurfSnowBros | Snowboards, snowboard boots, and bindings | Showroom at 39 Debaratna Road, Bang Kaeo, Bang Phli, Samut Prakan; online store |
| THE EDITION | Premium ski and snowboard clothing and accessories | Gaysorn Amarin, Ground Floor; online store |
| Leisure Social | Ski apparel and accessories | Central Embassy, Level 2; online store |
| Decathlon Thailand | Base layers, jackets, pants, and some winter-sports equipment | Online, with store inventory checks by size |
| Cold A Day | General winter coats and clothing | Gooddays Market, Pattanakarn Tat Mai Road, Prawet; online store |
Which store should you choose?
| If you need… | Try… | Why it may suit you |
|---|---|---|
| Affordable beginner clothing | Decathlon Thailand | It lists base layers, gloves, socks, jackets, and snow pants at several price points, with online size checks. |
| Premium ski or snowboard clothing | THE EDITION or Leisure Social | Useful if you want to browse labels and try apparel or accessories in person. |
| Snowboard, bindings, and boots | SurfSnowBros | A specialist shop with snowboard equipment and setup advice. |
| Clothing for one trip | Winterent BKK | It lists ski clothing and suits for rent, but not skis or snowboards. |
| Board or ski servicing | BSR Snow Lab | It lists waxing and edge tuning for skis and snowboards. |
For preorder items from SurfSnowBros, confirm the delivery timing and deposit terms before ordering.
A board, bindings, and boots need to work together. If you are looking for alpine skis, call ahead to ask about skis and ski boots in your model and size.
Try clothing over the base layer and mid layer you plan to wear. A jacket and pants should suit the snow conditions and how you ride, so check each model’s waterproofing, breathability, and snow-blocking features. Cold A Day focuses on general winter wear that can work for travel or city days; that does not automatically make every item suitable for the slopes.
What should a first-timer buy, and what can you rent?
If you are not sure whether you will stick with skiing or snowboarding, start with items that touch your skin and need a personal fit. Rent the larger pieces while you learn what works for you.
| Item | A practical first-trip choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Base layers, snow socks, and gloves | Buy or bring from Thailand | You can choose a comfortable fit before the trip |
| Ski jacket and pants | Buy or rent | Renting can save luggage space if the resort has your size and the right condition |
| Ski goggles | Try them with your helmet before buying, or rent | Fit depends on your face and the helmet you will wear |
| Skis or snowboard, boots, and helmet | Usually available to rent at the resort | You can learn your preferred style and sizing before investing in specialist gear |
Rental options depend on the resort, package, dates, and available sizes. Check ahead, especially if you need a particular clothing size or are renting for a child. For more detail, see our guides to ski gear rental in Japan and what to wear skiing in Japan.
Sample budgets for getting ready
These are example budgets based on online prices as of 20 October 2026. They exclude shipping and resort rental fees; prices vary by model and size.
Should you order online or visit a shop?
Online ordering can be convenient for products you already know, such as base layers, ski socks, or a replacement item with familiar sizing and specifications. Check the size chart, product details, and return or exchange terms. Try snowboard boots for fit; ski boots are best fitted with help from a boot fitter. A helmet should fit snugly, and goggles are worth trying with the helmet you will use.
Board length depends on rider weight, height, and riding style, so ask the shop to help choose a size. Before ordering, confirm actual stock in your size, product specifications, board-and-binding and boot compatibility, delivery timing, the return or exchange policy, and warranty or after-sales support.
Buy in Thailand or wait until Japan?
Buying in Thailand gives you time to try on clothing and prepare before flying. Specialist shops in Japan may have a broader selection. If you have time in Tokyo, the Kanda–Ogawamachi district has several sports shops, including ski and snowboard stores, according to the Chiyoda Tourism Association. More shops do not automatically mean lower prices.
Compare the same model year and size, then include currency exchange, baggage or shipping costs, and warranty terms. Japan’s tax-free system changes for purchases from 1 November 2026. Check the latest details with Japan Customs before shopping.
