Oi-Qaragai Mountain Resort

Forest skiing in the Tian Shan, mountain stays, and the first chapter of the Kazakhstan Ski Adventure.

Almaty Region, Kazakhstan

Overview

Oi-Qaragai is an all-season mountain resort set within Ile-Alatau National Park, around 40 minutes by car from Almaty. Forested ski terrain meets mountain accommodation, restaurants, equipment rental, and a range of activities for those who want to enjoy the mountains beyond skiing.

Getting There

From Almaty, allow about 40 minutes by taxi or private car in normal conditions, arrange the resort transfer in advance, or take bus 210 from the Palace of Sports in about one hour. The resort has parking. From ALA, use a taxi, private car, or pre-booked resort transfer, but do not apply the 40-minute city estimate to the airport journey. Tell the operator about ski or snowboard bags before pickup; bus 210 is more practical with light luggage. Read the full Oi-Qaragai transport guide.

Who It's For

  • Beginners and mixed-ability groups
  • Travellers who prefer a quieter mountain base
  • Families and non-skiing companions
  • Travellers looking for coaching and guidance

Snow Quality

Forested mountain terrain. Oi-Qaragai offers a different mountain experience from Shymbulak, with lower-elevation, tree-lined terrain and a relaxed mix of skiing and activities beyond the slopes.

Best Time to Go

January - March. January through March is the heart of the winter season at Oi-Qaragai, combining good skiing conditions with the resort’s wider mountain experiences. Late February offers a particularly good balance of winter scenery, time on the slopes, and the chance to enjoy the resort beyond skiing.

Crowds & Lift Queues

Variable. As a year-round mountain resort, Oi-Qaragai welcomes both day visitors and overnight guests, so weekends and holidays can be busier. Staying at the resort gives the group an advantage, with the slopes and lifts close at hand for an easy start to the ski day.

Why Ski Here

  • 26 runs, 28km — Explore 26 runs across 28 kilometres of forested mountain terrain, with options for different levels of skiers and snowboarders.
  • Stay on the mountain — Mountain accommodation keeps you close to the slopes and lets the group settle into the first ski days without leaving the resort.
  • Beyond the slopes — Restaurants, family activities, and the surrounding forest offer plenty to enjoy, including for companions who may not ski every day.
