Shymbulak Mountain Resort

High-alpine skiing above Almaty — and one of two mountain resorts in the Kazakhstan Ski Adventure.

Almaty, Kazakhstan

Overview

Shymbulak is Almaty’s high-alpine ski resort in the Trans-Ili Alatau and the second mountain base in the Kazakhstan Ski Adventure. The Medeu gondola links the city-facing valley with a resort area spanning roughly 2,200–3,180m.

Getting There

From ALA or Almaty, try a direct Yandex Go Electro ride to Shymbulak, but treat it as an option rather than a guarantee: the vehicle must suit the trip and the driver must accept the mountain destination. Tell the driver about ski or snowboard bags before pickup. If a direct ride is unavailable, travel to Medeu and continue by gondola or eco-bus; for the return, use the same choices in reverse. Read the full Shymbulak transport guide.

Who It's For

  • Skiers and snowboarders who enjoy higher alpine terrain
  • Mixed-ability groups using marked resort slopes
  • Travellers combining mountain days with time in Almaty
  • Travellers who want coaching support and a clear mountain-day plan

Snow Quality

High-alpine terrain. The ski area rises through a high-alpine range, so a measured first day and flexible mountain plan make the experience more comfortable.

Best Time to Go

January - March. For the most wintry mountain experience, plan for January through March. Late February is a strong time to enjoy the alpine setting, while upper lifts and terrain can still change with the weather.

Crowds & Lift Queues

Variable. Shymbulak is Almaty’s home mountain and can be busier on weekends and holidays. Weekday timing and live lift status are the most reliable planning tools.

Why Ski Here

  • Higher alpine terrain — Roughly 17–20km of winter slopes and up to 920m of vertical difference give Shymbulak its high-mountain character.
  • Ten lifts — The lift network connects learning terrain, groomed pistes, and upper-mountain zones when conditions allow.
  • Mountain and city — Hotels, restaurants, rental, and gondola access keep Almaty within reach.

Strengths

  • High-alpine setting within Almaty’s city limits
  • Direct Medeu–Shymbulak gondola access
  • Ski school, rental, restaurants, and mountain accommodation
  • Night skiing on selected operating dates

Trade-offs

  • Wind and visibility can affect upper lifts
  • Weekend demand can increase queues
  • Altitude requires a measured first day

Where to Stay

  • Shymbulak Resort Hotel — The mountain stay used for the Shymbulak portion of the Kazakhstan Ski Adventure, keeping the group close to the slopes, restaurants, and resort atmosphere.
