Compare Shymbulak and Oi-Qaragai from Almaty, with ski-pass references, city rental price ranges, practical planning and SnowCrew coaching.
Kazakhstan combines an Almaty city stay with two distinct mountain experiences. Shymbulak rises above the city through Medeu, while Oi-Qaragai is a forested mountain resort in the wider Almaty region.
> Quick choice: choose Shymbulak for higher alpine terrain and straightforward access from Almaty; choose Oi-Qaragai for a mountain stay, forest setting and more activities for a mixed skiing and non-skiing group. Visiting both gives you two different sides of skiing in Kazakhstan.
Choose the destination
Destination - Character - Best for - Practical guide
Shymbulak - High-alpine resort above Almaty, accessed through Medeu - Skiers and snowboarders combining city and mountain time - Access, prices and night skiing
Oi-Qaragai - Forested mountain resort in the Almaty region - Mixed-ability groups, mountain stays and non-skiing companions - Ski pass, rental and practical details
Shymbulak works well when Almaty remains the main base and the group wants lift-served alpine terrain. Oi-Qaragai offers a more self-contained resort rhythm, with mountain accommodation, equipment rental and activities beyond skiing.
For terrain, accommodation and suitability by ability, use the Shymbulak Resort guide and Oi-Qaragai Resort guide.

Renting ski gear in Almaty
Renting in the city can be useful when Almaty is your base and you want to collect equipment before travelling to the mountain. A sample of public city rental cards gives the following planning range:
Equipment - Session - 24 hours
--- - ---: - ---:
Adult skis or snowboard with boots - 5,500–6,000 KZT - 7,000–8,500 KZT
Child skis with boots and poles - 4,500–5,000 KZT - 5,500–6,000 KZT
Skis or snowboard without boots - 4,000–4,500 KZT - 5,500–6,000 KZT
Jacket and trousers - about 6,000 KZT - about 7,000 KZT
Helmet - 1,500–2,000 KZT - about 2,000 KZT
A “session” is normally a daytime or evening block rather than a full 24 hours; the exact hours and weekday/weekend rate depend on the shop. City rental means carrying the equipment to and from the resort, so compare price with convenience and confirm the return time before collecting it.
What is known for 2026/27
Oi-Qaragai has published season-pass information for adults 15+ and children 7–14. A season pass is intended for repeated use across the winter and is not a daily-trip budget.
A confirmed 2026/27 daily ski-pass table is not yet included in this cluster for either resort. The utility pages keep historical daily figures visibly separated from the current season-pass and pedestrian information.
Practical planning
- Allow time in Almaty before the first high-mountain day.
- Choose around the group: city access and alpine terrain solve a different need from a self-contained mountain stay.
- A full-day Shymbulak ski pass includes the Medeu gondola.
- Oi-Qaragai published separate app and cash prices in 2025/26.
- Compare amounts in KZT rather than fixing them to a THB exchange rate.
SnowCrew coaching
SnowCrew coaches support first-time and returning skiers and snowboarders with equipment setup, technique and terrain choice. Meet the team and see the coaching approach on the SnowCrew ski and snowboard coaching page.

Kazakhstan Ski Adventure 2027 is the place for current SnowCrew dates, inclusions and availability. This guide remains focused on choosing the destination and understanding the public planning information.
Price note: historical day-pass figures are labelled 2025/26. Almaty rental ranges combine public retail rate cards from Gotourist and Töbe reviewed on 20 August 2026; promotional bundles that include a ski pass are excluded. Exact sizes, models, deposits, session hours and availability must be confirmed with the rental shop. Review the Shymbulak tariffs and Oi-Qaragai tickets once before booking.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Kazakhstan good for skiing?
Kazakhstan can be a strong choice for travellers who want Almaty city time alongside skiing. Shymbulak and Oi-Qaragai serve different needs: higher alpine terrain and city access versus a forested mountain-resort stay.
When is ski season in Kazakhstan?
Winter operations vary with conditions and resort. Check the live resort notice before booking; this guide does not treat a historical timetable as a confirmed 2026/27 schedule.
Should I choose Shymbulak or Oi-Qaragai?
Choose Shymbulak for the high-alpine, Medeu-and-Almaty experience. Choose Oi-Qaragai for a forested mountain base with wider on-resort facilities. A two-resort trip gives you both.
How much does ski rental cost in Almaty?
A public-rate sample reviewed in August 2026 puts an adult ski or snowboard set with boots at about 5,500–6,000 KZT per session or 7,000–8,500 KZT for 24 hours. Session hours, equipment models and availability vary by shop.
